Taking a break
So, the Easter break is finally here. In addition to making me realize how close my exams are, I hope that this break will give me some time to relax. Now, when I think about relaxing, I don’t just mean the part where you lie on the couch. A part of what I value with holidays is to have some time alone with yourself. It’s not that I don’t enjoy company, I usually like being active and seeing and learning new things. However, I have experienced that it’s often during the moments when I’m alone that I manage to see things from a new perspective, get new ideas and grasp concepts I didn’t understand before.
My theory is that usually, you’re always giving your brain new impressions, tasks and challenges. This is all what I like to call input, the brain receives stimulus, and processes it. However, when you let your brain rest for a while, you are stopping the constant flow of things to handle, and then something new happens. The brain begins to reorganize itself, make new connections, sort out the things that are floating around up there and relate them to your previous thoughts and experiences. You have probably had that feeling where you try really hard to remember or understand something, and you give up and let it go for a while, and then suddenly it hits you. Your mind was probably working on the problem all along, you just stopped forcing it to work the way you wanted, in a conscious manner.
So, if you have some spare time, my advice for you is this: try to take some time alone with your brain, and you might be surprised by what you discover.
