I can fix stuff!

Ok, it was just my computer, but I still feel kind of proud. First the background story. A while ago, one fine, sunny day, I turned on my computer and it refused to boot. Now, I do have this belief that I’m not too bad with computers, but when I was suddenly presented with a BIOS screen that told me it couldn’t find my harddisk, I had to admit I felt quite helpless. To make matters worse, I was at that time on what I consider to be the wrong side of the Atlantic, and supposed to be enjoying myself, but I could only think about how it would be hopeless to get help with my computer before I got home, and I really wanted to know whether my hard disk was completely fried.

Well, I survived a week of agony before getting home, and found out that I should take a look at the hard drive before doing anything. That turned out to be a good idea, because it had actually physically fallen out of place, meaning that it was not connected to the computer. Well, I thought, this explains it all, I put the drive back in place and hoped that all would be well. I turned on the computer again, same result. It could now find the drive, but the Windows installation had obviously been damaged. At this point I felt quite frustrated and was almost ready to give up hope of getting my files back. There is no doubt about it, I depend on the internet in my everyday life. I still remember the time when we had a dial-up connection, and I wonder how I managed to get by. I’ve come to realize that it is only through being able to use internet as much as I want that I’ve discovered how much you can benefit from it. So, here is a small list of what I like about it. How stupid do you think I am?

So, I tried to find this song I wanted on MSN Music today. I know, I shouldn’t be using it, but seeing as I don’t have an iPod and I don’t live in the US, it’s actually my only choice. The funny thing is that when I opened the site, innocently awaiting the familiar front page, I get the following message instead. “You do not have access to MSN Music. You need the following to access this web page…”. Now, this usually doesn’t happen to me when I browse, and so when I saw this message, I felt my pulse starting to race, worrying if there is something wrong with my beloved computer, or even worse, something wrong with the Internet. As my eyes race down the page, desperately searching for a solution to this sudden and brutal dismissal, I suddenly notice a point on the page. As the truth sinks in, I’m not sure whether to be relieved, irritated or just laugh. Continue reading How stupid do you think I am?

Coding and such

It has occurred to me that a great deal of the sites I come across are stressing the importance of having good coding and a user friendly site, and yet so many of the premade website and blogging systems (don’t even get me started on MySpace) seem to completely ignore this. Now, I know that many people don’t see the point of following web standards, and at some level I understand this view, coding is made for displaying web sites, so if it displays what you want it to, it’s good, right? Good old music

I’ve discovered that I always seem to listen to the same music. Well, there isn’t anything wrong with that, the problem is just that because I listen to music almost all the time, I’m afraid of hearing the same songs so often that I get sick of them. I feel that this is happening with some of my favourite music, which is not good. The problem is that when I find new music that I like, I listen to it so often that soon it isn’t new anymore. Intuitive computerism

Yes, I admit it. I seem to have some sort of natural ability when it comes to getting around computers. Not that I’m a genius or something, I just don’t find it particularly difficult to learn how to handle new programs, fix unexpected issues or find a missing file. Now, I realize that many people are not like this, but lately, I’ve noticed that there seems to be two general ways of handling your computer.

When I do something on the computer, be it in Photoshop or on the net, many people ask me: “how on earth did you do that?”. And then I’ll say, “well, I don’t remember quite, something like this, or this”, and then I show them, and they usually say somthing like “what?”. My point here is not that they are unintelligent, just that they have another way of dealing with things. I don’t remember every detailed step in how to do something. I just play around with it until I find a solution, in an intuitive way. Continue reading Intuitive computerism
